Brazil - Armed forces



The Brazilian armed forces had a total strength of 287,600 active personnel with reserves of 1,115,000 in 2002. The army had 189,000 personnel; the navy, 48,600 (including 13,900 marines and 1,150 naval airmen); air force personnel totaled 50,000. Equipment included 87 main battle tanks, four submarines, one aircraft carrier (the only one in Latin America), 14 frigates, and 264 combat aircraft. The paramilitary, under army control, has a public security force of 385,600. Brazil participates in two peacekeeping missions. In 1999 military spending was $13.4 billion, or 1.9% of GDP.
