Guatemala - Armed forces

The national armed forces (31,400 active and 35,000 reserves) are combined for administrative purposes, and the army provides logistical support to the navy and air force. In 2002 the armed forces numbered 29,200 in the army, 1,500 in the navy, and 700 in the air force. The navy had 9 coastal patrol craft, and the air force had 10 combat aircraft and 12 armed helicopters of low readiness. The national police force of about 19,000 supplements the army in a national emergency. Defense expenditures amounted to $120 million in 1999 or 0.6% of GDP. A decree promulgated in December 1983 authorized military service for women.
